Summary of Repairs: Phase 1 (1994/95)

Repairs to the north-east elevation and all high level masonry accessible from this elevation including rebuilding the top of the Nursery Bellturret and reroofing the Staircase Tower. Reroofing, reglazing Lantern and masonry repairs to the area over the Cedar Staircase. Repairs to high level chimneys, masonry and roofs of the main building. Structural repairs and reroofing to the Loggia, east of the main house.

The glazed lantern had leaked for many years and had been covered with polythene secondary glazing on framing in an attempt to keep out the water.
This photograph shows a prop that was inserted to prevent settlement at the corner due to seepage of water into the structure.

This photograph shows some of the extensive rot discovered in timbers when the leadwork was opened up.

This photograph shows the wall tops reinstated to receive new leadwork following the removal of the rotten wooden decking.

The work required the erection of a temporary scaffold roof while the leadwork was stripped to minimise the risk of leakages because of the elaborate nature of the internal decorative plasterwork of the staircase

This photograph shows work completed with the leadwork recast and relaid and new glazing installed following repairs to the timbers and masonry.

This photograph shows the rotten joists cut back to sound wood and treated with replacement end sections bolted in place.

The Nursery Bellturret
This photograph shows the condition of the arch course of stonework before repair. The original concealed iron band had rusted and spalled off the outer faces of the stonework leaving this structure in a rather precarious state.

The iron band was removed after dismantling the stonework and replaced with a new stainless steel band.
The arch course stonework was renewed and will soon weather in to match.

Roof of the Loggia on the cast side of the building
The lead lined valley gutters had leaked badly over the years and one main beam carrying the roof had rotted through almost completely at its bearing.
This photograph shows the roof stripped, timbers repaired and the boarding of the valley gutters reformed to an improved layout.

This photograph shows the roof reslated, the leadwork recast and relaid and perished stonework renewed at the north corner.
