The Refectory is our central location for meals on campus, breakfast between 7.30 – 8.30am, lunch from 11.30am to 1.00pm, and dinner between 5.30pm – 7.00pm. Adjustments in time are made from time to time for convenience of students and faculty.
The Bistro is our recently renovated student/ faculty pub, the scene of poetry readings, music, good conversations, and good fun. The Bistro has full internet access and is great for study—individually or in groups—and for committee meetings, relaxing, and television viewing. In the evenings, pub service begins, usually Monday-Thursday between 8.30pm – 11.00pm. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and snacks are sold. Student Government often organises parties and events in the Bistro.
Basic cleaning products are available on each floor for student use, including a Hoover (vacuum cleaner). Also, our House Team is available in cases of particularly difficult cleaning problems. “Rubbish” is collected from the corridors daily as required.
Sheet exchange, in the Housekeeping Area, is on Mondays 12:30-2:30. This is a genuine exchange—bring the soiled linen to get fresh. Pillows are provided. Towels and washcloths are not.
Laundry facilities are available 24/7 in both the Manor and the Carriage House. These facilities are available at all hours. These are coin operated, with a change machine near the Junior Common Room. Irons and ironing boards are also available in the laundry areas.
At Harlaxton, our minds never close and our Library never closes. It is open 24/7. For more information, please see the Library webpage.
Mail is delivered to and collected from Harlaxton College daily. Each student has a mailbox (usually two students per mailbox). A note in the mailbox tells when cookies (or any other parcels) have arrived from home! Stamps are available at Reception.
Our Maintenance Team is quick to help during normal business hours, and emergency help is available evenings and weekends by way of request through Security staff. Please note your requests on a Fix-It List in the Reception area—it is reviewed every morning, with response.
As everywhere else, Skype and cell (“mo-bile”) phones are replacing land lines in student usage at Harlaxton. But Harlaxton still has eight “call boxes” handle outgoing and incoming calls, five located on the ground floor of the manor house and three in the carriage house. All of the call boxes take coins and will allow calls to be made to Freephone International Operators (such as AT&T) at no charge.
Incoming calls need to be arranged in advance between the caller and recipient. The arrangements should include the time the call is to be made and the location where the recipient will be waiting. We are unable to search for recipients of impromptu calls. We do, however, seek to locate students or faculty in cases of emergency: emergency calls should be directed to the main college number (from the US 011 44 1476 403000).
Many students choose to purchase mobile (cell) phones upon arrival in the UK. These may be used for incoming calls from the US, local calls, or emergencies. Many telephone companies offer cheap deals on new telephones and some even offer specials for US long distance calling. Be aware of any long-term expensive contract agreements and that calling mobile telephones in the UK from the US may be expensive.
Television lounges (with video access) are in both manor and carriage house. A satellite feed brings in the major British channels plus some others of special interest, such as MTV, History, Discovery, National Geographic, and ESPN America. TV/VCR/DVD sets are available in the Bistro and Pearson room, and video players and films are available for rental.
Harlaxton College offers a shuttle service to and from Grantham throughout the day, Monday through Saturday. Shuttles begin running at about 8.00am and stop running about 5.30pm. Sunday morning, the shuttle service is to and from area churches on a set schedule if there are sufficient people sign up on the previous Friday. Those wishing to attend an Anglican service might also walk to Harlaxton Church (in our village). The shuttle service is reduced on weekends, when there is less demand.
